Rishikesh near by areas where some tribes are living in small villages. Below mentioned tribes are main attractions.

Gujjar Tribe

The Gujjar is also known as Van Gujjar or Gurjar. Gujjars are found in the Shivalik range of himalaya in North India. The Gujjars follow Islam religion. The Gujjars appeared in northern part of India around the time of the Huna invasions of north India. Gujjars their life is mainly dependent on cattle and selling milk in the city. These tribes were Hindus in past and took up Islam around 200 years ago. There is also local primary school where an old Gujjar teaches Arabian language to children. The Gujjars had conflicts with the forest department as Human and livestock populations are not allowed inside a national park.

Area : Near Rajaji National Park and surrounded area.
Language : Mostly Hindi.
Occupation : Farming and Dairy products.

Bhotiya Tribe

Bhotiya people is also known as Bhotia, Bhot, Bot, Bhutiya, Bhutia, Marchha or tolchha. Trans-himalayan hill area near the Tibet- Uttarakhand border and Nepal- Uttarakhand border is known as Bhoot or Bhot. This are is around 250 kms far from Rishikesh. People who live in that area is known as bhotiya. Bhotiya people are similar to Tibetan people.

Area : Bhotiya people mostly live in Harsil, Garhwal, Almora, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, and Kumaon area.
Occupation : Bhotiya people's main occupation was Animal husbandry. Now some people trade wool and salt between India and Tibet. Some involved in gems, stones and herbs.
Lifestyle : These people live with their family and mostly prefer their family business as a occupation.
Physical Significance : Less height, heavy head, round face, small eyes, less hair on body and flat nose. Bhotiya people look similar to Tibetan.
Marriage : People from groom's side go to brides home for wedding and bring the bride to their home in doli. There is little interesting friendly war is organized between both side (groom's relatives vs bride's relatives) Bride's relatives has to loss the war compulsory. Widow women are not allowed for second marriage. Child marriage is also not allowed.
Spiritual : Bot (Bhotiya) people worship in Lord Shiva and Sheshnag (King of Snakes).
Music : Bhotiya people have 3 types of music. Tubera, Bajyu and Timli.
Funeral ceremonies : Similar to Hindu people, bhotiya people also burn the dead bodies. They plant a tree near lake or waterfall and offer water to it for seven days.
Language : Bot (Bhotiya) people speak bhoti or Ladakhi which is one of the most richest anciant language in the world. It was created in 7th centaury and generally written in Tibetan script.

Jadh Tribe

Jadh people are mostly live near the valley of Jhanvi river (upper valley of Bhagirathi river) in Uttarkashi. This are is around 250 kms far from Rishikesh. Jadh people is also described as bhotiya tribe, but they are little different. Jadh people believe that they belongs to the Rajput caste.

Lifestyle : Jadh people has less family bonding compare to Hindu people. Young people leave their family once they become adult. Men and women has same rights on property. Priest is known as Lama. Sex before the marriage is not prohibited like the Hindu people.
Marriage : Jadh people are very free minded about marriage compare to Hindu people. Boy and girl are free for marriage. Other ceremonies are similar to Bhotiya tribe. Second marriage is allowed for widow. Having more than one wife or one husband at a time is also normal thing.
Occupation : Jadh people mostly people earn money from handicrafts (woolen).
Festivals : Lauh sar in biggest festival of jadh tribe which is celebrated in February- March. People use five color flags to please Lord Buddha. Shurgain is also another festival during November. Jadh people worship their god for 3 days during this festival.
Language : Jadh people speak Rogba Language, which is more similar to Tibetan than Garhwali.

Bhoksa Tribes

Bhoksa is also known as buksa, mehri or mehra. Bhoksa is one of the leading tribe in Uttarakhand. Bhoksa people mostly lives in the villages near Pauri, Dehradun and Nainital which is 100 kms far from Rishikesh.

Occupation : Bhoksa people mostly depended on Agriculture.
Lifestyle : Bhoksa families has generally male depended. Men and women has same rights on property. Social decision are taken by "Panchayat".

Jaunsari Tribe

Jaunsari tribe is one of the leading tribe of garhwal. Jaunsari people mostly live in Bhabar area near Dehradun. This area is 130 kms far from Rishikesh. (Kalsi, Chakrata, Lakha Mandal, Jaunpur).

Lifestyle : Head of small areas is known as "sayana" and group of sayana is known as Khumri.
Marriage : Having more than one wife or one husband at a time is also normal thing.
Spirituality : Jaunsari people believe in Mahasu God. (Lord Shiva).
Festivals : Vissu, Pachoi, Diwali, Baisakhi and Magh Mela are major festival of Jaunsari People.
Dance and Music : Thumkiya, Barandi Gandiya, Ras Raso are major dance styles.
Occupation : Agriculture is main occupation.

Tharu Tribe

Tharu people live in the area from Nainital to Champavat, Which is 280 kms far from Rishikesh.

Lifestyle : In Tharu people head of the family is always female. All males follow orders of female.

Marriage : Tharu peoples marriage ceremony is similar to Hindu people. Some time exchange of girls is also normal thing in marriage. (Bride's brother will marry to groom's sister).
Spirituality : Tharu people follow Hindu religion. Sometime they kill and offer animals to God to get blessings.
Festivals : Tharu people have similar festivals like Hindu people.
Funeral ceremonies : Tharu people do not burn dead bodies but their ceremony is similar to Christian people.

Khas Tribe

Khas is north west area of Uttarakhand (Dehradun and Mussoorie) which is 140 kms far from Rishikesh.

Occupation : Agriculture is main occupation.
Lifestyle : Men and women are treated in similar way.
Marriage : Having more than one husband at a time is very normal thing.
Spiritual : Khas people worship in Lord Shiva.
Festivals : Hariyali is major festival of Khas people.

Shauka Tribe

Shauka people live near pithoragarh are, which is 290 kms far from Rishikesh. The Shauka tribe living in the Johar Valley of Goriganga river in Munsyari Tehsil of the Pithoragarh district are also known as Johari or Johari Shauka. This tribe shows a rich cultural heritage. Shaukas are the followers of Hindu religion. This tribe rely on the Hindu Brahmins to conduct religious ceremonies. Their main deity of tribe is Goddess Nanda Devi in Martoli and Milam.

Raji Tribe

Raji people is also known as banraut. Raji people live in pithoragarh district which is 290 kms far from Rishikesh. Raji people mostly worship Jungla as a god. Raji people speak munda language.
